Kota Kinabalu: Calling on all corporate organisations and members of the public to support the inaugural Wisma Merdeka City Charity Run on October 16 (Sunday) for a good cause, and that is, in aid of Sabah Pemadam (Drug Prevention Association of Malaysia), Kota Kinabalu Branch, and the Sabah Society for the Deaf (SSD).It is being organised by the Merdeka Complex Traders Association in collaboration with Wisma Merdeka Management Sdn Bhd.

Organising Chairman Michael Yong said Wednesday, the 10-km run has the full support of Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK).

Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai, who is also the Chairman of Sabah Pemadam, Kota Kinabalu Branch, will flag off the event at Padang Merdeka at 6am.

"The event is open to the public. We are looking to have about 1,000 participants. There is no cut-off time to complete the run.

"All profits derived from this run will go to charity. We hope to be able to give at least RM5000 to each of the two beneficiaries. The more participants we have, the more funds we will raise. For this reason, we are planning to draw schools and colleges to this event," he told a press conference.

Charity aside, Yong said other objectives of the event are to promote running as a regular exercise for fitness and to create a loving and caring society. "We are, in a sense, complementing the Government's effort to promote a healthy lifestyle among all age groups in the community," he added.

There are three main categories : Men's & Women's Open (18 and above), Men's & Women's Veteran (40 and above) and Boy's & Girl's (below 18). For each category, the winner gets a cash prize of RM500, followed by the runner-up (RM400), third place (RM300), fourth place (RM200) and fifth place (RM100).

"Apart from ground activities for everyone to participate, free drinks and snacks will be served.

As many as 100 lucky draw prizes are in store for participants who complete the run. These include bicycles, handphones, hampers, T-shirts, hotel accommodation vouchers, hotel buffet vouchers and KFC snack vouchers," said Yong.

Registration fee is RM70 per single participant while each group entry of five runners and above will be at RM65 per participant. All registered runners will be entitled to an event T-shirt, a bib number and other goodies, including vouchers and snacks all in a recycled bag.
