Penampang: Personnel from the Fire and Rescue's Hazardous Material Handling Team (Hazmat) had to be called in after a mercury spillage was reported in the laboratory of SM St Michael here on Friday. It was learnt that a thermometer in the laboratory broke causing a small amount of mercury to spill.

The team from Penampang, assisted by those from the Kota Kinabalu Fire and Rescue Department cleared the toxic chemical by pouring sulphur over it and collected the chemical into a disposal bag. The affected area was then sprayed with Clorox.

A total of 20 students were taken to a safe location for further action, while a Form Four student sustained slight injuries on his hand caused by pieces from the thermometer which broke.

The 16-year-old was rushed to the hospital by a staff of the school.
