Penampang: Personnel from the Fire and Rescue's Hazardous Material Handling Team (Hazmat) had to be called in after a mercury spillage was reported in the laboratory of SM St Michael here on Friday. It was learnt that a thermometer in the laboratory broke causing a small amount of mercury to spill. The team from Penampang, assisted by those from the Kota Kinabalu Fire and Rescue Department cleared the toxic chemical by pouring sulphur over it and collected the chemical into a disposal bag. The affected area was then sprayed with Clorox.
