Kota Kinabalu: All the nine selected local amateur boxers who will carry the Sabah flag in this year's Malaysia Cup in Perak early next month are in high spirit both physically and mentally. All of them, Chin Chi Hau, Lexvister Sikim, Arick Apao, Khairul Azim, Randall Kadayum, Mohd Firdaus, Samuel Johnsen Michael, Shamir Johnny and Steven Onn Jeinging promised to give their best during the October 8-13 national level competition.

"We will seriously make full use of the week-long rigid training opportunities extended to us by Sabah Amateur Boxing Association (Saba) to ensure satisfactory boxing performances during the competition and with a burning desire to bring home medals," they stressed.

Inspired with the attitude of the boxers, Saba President Datuk Orlando Harumal reminded the 'Lucky 9' Sabah team to focus on foot work, stamina building, punching speed, intelligent manoeuvring strategies, and physical and mental preparedness during the training sessions which will start tomorrow (Thursday) at the Likas Sports Complex in Kota Kinabalu.

"I want our boys to be qualified, disciplined and intelligent boxers and not just mere fighters when inside the ring... Prepare yourselves for the bouts and refrain from making any silly and unnecessary mistakes," said Orlando when asked for personal comments after announcing the official names of the boxers recently.

Orlando said coming out victorious in the Malaysia Cup will mean an opportunity for our boxers to participate in other higher level competitions like the Commonwealth event.

He said Sabah has been producing potential medallists boxers for many years now and Saba wishes to maintain such reputation.

The President said boxers should not forget that 'luck' also plays a role in every boxing bout. So, lets pray that the lucky stars of our boxers will be with them when inside the ring next month.
