Kunak: The underground tunnel, located some 12km from town, has its own unique appeal and story – being one of the natural caves formed by the basalt larva flow from the eruption of the Mostyn volcano thousands of years ago. Locally known as the Japanese underground tunnel, it sits inside a palm oil plantation.

The tunnel risks collapsing and that was why it was not promoted as a tourist spot.

It is understood that the tunnel served as hideout for the Japanese soldiers during the World War II and presently maintained by the plantation company.

The tunnel was discovered in 1970 by a hunter before the area was developed as a cultivation ground for cash crops.

A group of explorers visited the tunnels in May 2010.

There is no mention of the tunnel in any history book in the colonial era, although Mostyn Kunak was the landing point for the Japanese military during the war, said 43-year-old Mohd Amin Salleh.

He noted that the area should be maintained due to its historical significance.

It is understood that the State Museum Department had also visited the site early last year.
