Pile-up claims 8 from 2 families
Kota Kinabalu: Eight people from two families were killed and three seriously injured in an accident involving four vehicles along Jalan Kota Belud-Kota Marudu, near Kg Keguraan, in Kota Belud, Friday. The 6am accident, which involved a Proton Gen 2, Proton Saga, Perodua Kancil and a Toyota Hilux.

The deceased have been identified by police as the Proton Gen 2 driver, Frenwell Jeffery, 31, his brother Lance Corporal Herlin Naxe Jeffery, 26, who is based in the motorcycle patrol unit of the Klang Selatan police headquarters, and their 28-year-old relative Ellyzek Johnny.

All three Rungus men from Kg Parapat Darat, Kudat were heading to Kota Marudu from Kota Belud prior to the mishap.

The accident also claimed the lives of four Proton Saga passengers, Hamirah Mohamad Salleh, 39, three-year-old Nursyikah Abd Jumat and eight-year-old Aidil Abd Jumat, all from Kg Tanjung Kapor, Kudat.

The fourth passenger, six-year-old Vera Adira Jalius, from Kg Batu 3 Jalan Atas, Kudat, succumbed to her injuries at the Kota Belud Hospital.

The Proton Saga driver, Alibasa Alibaba, 24, also from Kg Tanjung Kapor and his two other passengers, Neta Ramlan, 37, from Kg Penempatan Telipok Baru and Sarini Body, 21, from Kg Batu 3 Jalan Atas, suffered serious injuries.

Neta died in hospital.

Kota Belud Police Chief Supt Mohd Zaidi Abdullah on Friday said initial findings showed the Gen 2 collided with the Saga which was heading to Kota Belud from Kota Marudu.

"At the same time, the Kancil and Hilux which were headed towards Kota Belud from Kota Marudu plunged into a drain in their bid to avoid hitting the Gen 2 and Saga," he said.

He said the Kancil driver, a 29-year-old woman from Kg Pandasan, sustained slight injuries, while the 45-year-old Toyota Hilux driver from Kg Sembulan Utara, Tanjung Aru, escaped unscathed.

Meanwhile, a 6am distress call prompted 11 firefighters from Kota Belud Fire and Rescue Department led by Asran Mohd Sarip to the scene located some 10 kilometres away.
