Sandakan: A divisional engineer with the Water Department detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to facilitate investigations into the RM3.3 billion scandal involving the department was released by the Magistrate's Court, Tuesday. Magistrate Faelly Jeffrey Lanjungan released the 59-year-old on a MACC bail set at RM200,000 undeposited with two local sureties.

The suspect was among the 19 engineers who were nabbed on Oct. 20 by the MACC across the State in a second wave of operations and were remanded for seven days.

Of the 19, five of the 14 engineers who had been remanded since Oct. 20 were released on Monday (Oct. 24) while the rest, except the 59-year-old suspect here, are still being detained for questioning.

On Tuesday, it was reported that a senior staff of the department in Tawau was the latest to be hauled up by the MACC to facilitate the on-going investigations on the abuse of Federal projects worth RM3.3 billion in the department.

The 35-year-old was brought before Magistrate Muhammad Faizal Che Saad who granted a five-day remand order, making him the fourth individual from the district so far, to be roped in.

The other three officers aged between 40 and 50 who were arrested last Thursday were further remanded another five days from Oct 23.

MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations) Datuk Azam Baki said the agency seized RM8.4 million in cash from those arrested in the second phase of the operation.
