Filipino claims trial to killing 8-year-old son

Kota Kinabalu: A 39-year-old Filipino lorry driver claimed trial at the High Court here to murdering his eight-year-old son.Aldwin Rojas Saz, who was brought before Judge Datuk Nurchaya Hj Arshad pleaded not guilty to committing the crime on one Rojas Jonvin at 2am on Feb 18 this year in a house behind the Wangsa sawmill in Nabawan.

The court set Jan 16 next year for pre-trial case management and ordered Aldwin remanded further as the charge against him has no provision for bail.

Aldwin faces the death sentence if convicted under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Aida Fatimah Datuk Abd Jabar prosecuted while Aldwin was not represented.

In the same court, a former company supervisor jailed 10 years and ordered given one stroke of the cane for committing criminal breach of trust had his sentence reduced following his appeal against his sentence.

Nurchaya substituted Cheam Tuck Ching's sentence to five years' jail and three lashes of the cane following his appeal against his sentence.

Cheam had on Sept 30 admitted at the Sessions Court to pocketing the workers' salary totalling RM52,217, which was entrusted to him as the supervisor of Cahaya Usahasama Sdn Bhd, on April 8, 2015.

The offence under Section 408 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of between one year and 14 years and liability of a fine on conviction.
