Kota Kinabalu: A 21-year-old jobless man, who was charged with causing hurt to a Canadian businessman while robbing him and his wife, wished to be out on bail instead of awaiting trial in prison.Alif Hussien told Sessions Court Judge Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim that he hoped the court would grant him bail as he wanted to live with his parents.

However, Noor Hafizah ordered him remanded further pending the disposal of his case and fixed Feb 17 for mention.

Earlier, Alif pleaded guilty to the charge against him but the court rejected his plea when he disputed the facts of the case.

Alif is accused of assaulting one Robert William Flintoft while robbing him and his wife Goh Giok Yee at 2am on Jan 8, this year at a house in Kg Tanjung Aru Tengah, here.

The charge stated that Alif also made off with some Chinese and Singaporean currency notes.

He allegedly committed the offence under Section 394 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years, and liability of a fine or whipping, on conviction.

The facts of the case revealed that on that day while the couple was sleeping, Flintoft heard their dog barking and went downstairs to check.

He saw an unknown man later identified as Alif ransacking a room downstairs.

Flintoft rushed towards the man and a fight occurred between him and Alif who suddenly took out a pair of scissors and stabbed Flintoft's head.

But Alif was detained after their family members called the police immediately.

Flintoft was sent to the hospital and received several stiches to his head.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Dinesh Raja appeared for the prosecution while Alif was not represented.
