Kuala Lumpur: The future of Malaysian football will hinge on 39 representatives from the Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) affiliates who will cast their votes during the FAM Congress on Saturday. The Professional Footballers Association of Malaysia (PFAM) president Hairuddin Omar said the 39 delegates who will cast their votes at the FAM Congress should not be biased because they would be the voice of the fans and supporters who want to see changes in Malaysian football.

"This is an important week for Malaysian football because the FAM's new office bearers will be voted in for the next four years (2017-2021). There should be no personal interest but delegates must vote wisely.

"I hope the delegates can ensure that only the right candidates are chosen to lead the FAM," he told reporters recently.

Hairuddin said as a former player himself, he would not like to see a repeat of incidents related to delay in payment of salary for players.

"If we want to lift the status of football in the country, there should be a total change because fans and supporters are fed up with the same issues. The entire set up in the development of football at all stages must change.

"It is no secret that the new office bearers will face an even more difficult challenge," he said.

The president's post will be a straight fight between the Tunku Mahkota of Johor (TMJ) Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim and Tan Sri Annuar Musa. Candidates will also be vying for the post of two deputy presidents, four vice presidents and committee. – Bernama
