Kota Kinabalu: Sabah DAP has challenged LDP as a BN component party as well as cabinet member in the State Government to object to Umno taking over and tabling Act 355 in Parliament.DAP Sabah Chairman Stephen Wong said this in response to statement by LDP President Datuk Teo Chee Kang in which he said LDP would like to reiterate its firm stand that any enhancement to the Syariah court's jurisdiction and sentencing power has to be in compliance and subject to the provisions in the Federal constitution.

"What has LDP done as a BN component party to oppose the Islamisation policy by BN.

LDP should not just make noise in newspapers but do nothing to stop Umno from tabling the bill.

"It is a fact where Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi has confirmed that the government will table the bill to amend Act 355 to increase the punishment limits allowable by Syariah court," said Wong.

Wong added that if Umno did not support the bill, there is no need to worry about the bill being passed in Parliament.

"Apparently now Umno-BN as a whole is prepared to table the bill and therefore all BN component parties must make a stand on whether they would reject the bill or even quit from BN because Umno had violated the consensus of BN."

Wong reiterated that DAP stood firm to defend the Federal constitution and secularism of the country, therefore there is no grey area on this matter. "DAP will go all out to reject the bill," Wong assured.

As the Sarawak government had reaffirmed that all Sarawak BN MPs including a number of Muslim MPs will reject this bill despite the bill being tabled by BN federal government, Wong challenged LDP as a component party in Sabah BN to pressure the State government to declare its stand on Act 355.

DAP has urged all MPs, particularly from Sabah and Sarawak, from both sides of the political divide to jointly reject this bill together and to oppose the increasing Islamisation policy in the nation.

Wong said that it is not only to protect the nation's secularism, but also to safeguard the spirit of the formation of Malaysia as well as Malaysia Agreement 1963 which guarantees freedom of religion to Sabah and Sarawak.

"If all Sabah and Sarawak MPs join hands to reject the bill, we will have enough number of members to prevent the bill being passed in Parliament," Wong added.
