Kota Kinabalu: Sabah police have yet to receive any clue or information to verify an allegation about the sighting of a group of armed men made by a plantation worker at Felda Sahabat 2, Lahad Datu, on May 14.However, State Police Commissioner Datuk Ramli Din said police were continuing with their investigation on the claim although the complainant made the police report only last Sunday after he bumped into and had a brief conversation with two of the armed men on April 30.

"The complainant gave many excuses for taking quite some time to lodge the police report about his claim.

"Nonetheless, we are still investigating the claim for safety purposes. The police, together with the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom), have gone to the concerned area for investigation purposes," he said, adding that as of now, the Sabah's East Coast is safe.

Ramli said this to reporters after officiating at the Sabah police contingent level Al-Quran Recital Competition held at the auditorium of Sabah police headquarters in Kepayan, here, Wednesday.

A 52-year-old plantation worker believed to be a foreigner lodged a police report last Sunday saying he bumped into the group of armed men while clearing a banana farm about 6.20pm on April 30.

The complainant said the five men were clad in camouflage pants and were armed.

He also claimed that two of the armed men told him that they came to "save" the people in Sabah and that 37 other individuals had landed at the beach.

To a question on the claim of the 37 individuals, Ramli said it would be wise for the public to report to police incidents that may pose threats to public safety and not to make false reports as legal action can be taken against them.

On the Quran recital competition, he said the annual contest was held in conjunction with the commemoration of the 210th Police Day which involved 27 contestants from among the police personnel and officers throughout many districts in Sabah.

He said the top winners from the Qari (men's category) and Qariah (women's category) would represent the Sabah Police Contingent in the upcoming national level event.
