Man dead, two warded after inhaling fumes
Tawau: One local man was killed and two others rushed to hospital after all three were overcome by smoke inhalation while doing welding work in the small confines of a scow, here, Tuesday. They are believed to have fallen unconscious while carrying out repair work at a quarry in Jalan Tinagat, Apas Parit, near the sea.

One of them, a local, was reported to have died at the scene while two foreigners who were brothers were rushed to the hospital. Their condition could not be immediately ascertained.

Acting District Fire Station Chief, Faisal Ahmad, said a total of 14 personnel were deployed to the scene in three fire engines and one utility vehicle after receiving a distress call at 3.13pm.

He said the team reached the location at 3.40pm and managed to remove all victims from the vessel at 5pm.

The victims were identified as Tsen Gaw Min, 29, and the two brothers as Jamaludin Lalo and Adi Lalo.

Their age could not be obtained at press time.

Faisal said the incident occurred when the scow, which was used for transporting rocks from the quarry at the area, sprung a leak.

Initially, he said, three workers used a suction pump to flush out the water from the vessel and a tool to weld the leakage.

"The second and the third victims were atop the vessel, while the first victim went down into the vessel to weld and do the repair work.

"Subsequently, he fell unconscious after inhaling the smoke, suspected to be poisonous and believed to contain carbon monoxide, from the welding equipment in the confined space... the second victim went down to help the first victim but he too became unconscious, followed by the third victim who also fainted in his attempt," he said. - Lagatah Toyos
