Kota Kinabalu: DAP Sabah Secretary Chan Foong Hin said they would focus and put more resources on Putatan and Sepanggar in the coming general election as part of DAP Sabah's vision in the West Coast area. In addition, Chan, who is also Sri Tanjong Assemblyman, said DAP Sabah will also look into contesting in Tanjung Aru and also the new seat of Darau.

"Selangor is the most recognised area of Malaya and Pakatan Harapan was able to capture the seats and form the government there.

"So by the same logic, we should place a similar focus and priority on the West Coast division, especially the greater KK area."

He said this means the four parliamentary seats – Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Putatan and Sepanggar.

"Kota Kinabalu has been a DAP seat for some time and in the last two elections we have also contested in Putatan and Sepangar. So before any latest seat negotiation is decided, we would like to announce that we would still play an active role in these two parliamentary seats besides Kota Kinabalu.

"We will put more focus and resources in these two areas. Under Putatan is also the Tanjung Aru state seat.

In the last election, DAP was interested to contest there but unfortunately we had to look at the bigger picture and concede to PAS. That is because Hadi Awang made the announcement first before the official result (of seat allocation was decided).

"So in this coming general election, we would not only focus on the two previously contested seats but also we need to contest in Tanjung Aru and consider the new seat of Darau."

He said this during a press conference at DAP headquarters here Thursday.

Also present were Tan Lee Fatt (Putatan coordinator), Ronnie Loh (Tanjung Aru coordinator) and Henry Shim (Likas coordinator).

Meanwhile, he also complained about the sad state of the Kg Numbak Sepangar bridge and surau where the DAP Sabah team and Kota Kinabalu MP Jimmy Wong had handed over wooden building materials to repair the structures.

"There was a signboard set up there where there was supposed to be a projek mesra rakyat to repair the bridge last year but judging from the bridge's condition, I question whether any repairs were done.

"Likewise the poor condition of the surau in the area, why wasn't it made good?

"During the recent buka puasa event there with Wong, DAP Sabah also donated six fans, six lighting fixtures and made repairs to the bridge and floor of the surau. In addition, we also donated 60 bags of rice to the needy, including single mothers," he said.

Meanwhile, Shim, who is also DAP Sabah Organising Secretary, called on the Government especially the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism to look into the risk of fake eggs and fake rice vermicelli being sold the State.

"As we can see on social media, there are many videos in China showing how these fake food items are made from plastic. What more during these economic challenging times where many people are on a budget and where unscrupulous business people would look for the opportunity to sell these fake food items."

Loh, meanwhile, also called attention to the water problem faced by Pulau Gaya villagers.

He said the villagers on the island have complained to him that they still face water problems despite RM93 million already being spent which was highlighted in the media where in November last year City Hall had received another an appeal from the villagers to accelerate the supply of treated water.

"At the moment a large family on the island can expect to spend RM14-21 every day for two to three 200L blue water tanks worth of freshwater to be delivered from the mainland which is a burden for them."

He suggested to City Hall that a smaller water tank be installed for the villagers in the area.

He also highlighted the dilapidated conditions of the walkways in the city's Sembulan water village which Loh said are in a very bad state.

"The area falls under City Hall's responsibility and the minister in charge of City Hall is Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Edward Yong Oi Fah. Why can't he utilise his assemblyman development funds to help fix this problem?

"Is leaving the area's walkways in such bad condition all part of the government's plan to help evict these water villagers for future development of the area? "

He also highlighted the case of a Sembulan water village household which was summoned four times by City Hall enforcement officers and compounded once for rubbish under their home.

"They told me the rubbish was not from them littering but was the result of settled rubbish on the seafloor under them since some years ago that rose to the surface during high tide. So it is unfair for them to be summoned four times in a row by City Hall for the same rubbish that been there all along. As such, I urge City Hall to investigate the matter."

Loh said he had also accompanied the family representative to get a discount on the compound from City Hall.

Tan, meanwhile, called attention to the dirty condition of the bazaar stalls in Putatan.

"Why didn't the district council take care of the cleanliness there? Where is the enforcement?

I see used cooking oil being simply dumped in the drains where this can cause blockages.

I hope the Putatan Council will take note of this matter."

He also said there were areas of Putatan which had no proper lighting.

"For example, in the Bukit Vor area, many of the streetlights are not functioning.

When I inquired the reason from the council engineer, I was told this was due to the underground cables being stolen. I urge the council to also take note of this matter." - Neil Chan
