Kota Kinabalu: The World Cup (Piala Dunia) race will be the highlight of the racing event organised by Royal Sabah Turf Club (RSTC) held in conjunction with their Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house celebration on Sunday (July 2).There will be 15 Class A, B and C thoroughbred horses vying for the title in the 1,000m race with Athena, Ben, Pop and Slippery Eel, the early favourites to lay claim for the total stake money of RM26,250 with an additional RM5,000 jackpot.

Club Chairman Peter Chin urged the public to join in the celebration where the programme will begin at 11.30am and World Cup race would be the eighth race scheduled to take place at 4:30pm. Chin also disclosed that various plans and projects to develop horse racing in the State are on the cards with the full backing from the RSTC committee.

"Among the planned projects was to have one to two races per month to attract enthusiasts from within and outside of the State to support and take part in local horse racing.

"We would also attempt to develop other areas of horse racing such as to assign jockeys, coaches, announcers and photographers to attend courses within and outside of the country thus improving the image and standard of horse racing in the State."

He added that the facilities in Tuaran will be upgraded including race track and stables as well as to improve the safety at the venue in order to attract foreign investment and at the same time to promote tourism.

"The club also hope to attract more enthusiasts to be involved in horse racing industry here and we will bring in horses from New Zealand and Singapore, and those who are interested to buy or to get into racing industry can refer to the Club," he said. - GL Oh
