34 homeless in Tawau Lama fire

Tawau: A total of six households comprising 34 victims were affected by a fire incident at Mile 2½ Jalan Tawau Lama on Monday, 10 days after the big fire in Kg Hidayat.District Welfare Department officers registered 15 men, nine women, five boys, three girls and two infant girls affected by the incident.

Tawau MP Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching was among the earliest to give cash contributions to the victims as well as the Armed Forces who donated food on Tuesday.

All the victims are staying with other family members as all temporary shelters are currently occupied.

District Fire and Rescue Department Acting Chief Faisal Ahmad said the 7pm incident razed four houses to the ground while three other houses were slightly damaged. The firefighters managed to save two other houses.

He said a team of 25 firefighters with three fire engines and four utility vehicles were rushed to the scene following a distress call at 7pm, reaching the location within nine minutes.

The fire was brought under control at 7.50pm.

No casualty was reported and the cause of the fire as well as total estimated loss are still under investigation. - Lagatah Toyos
