Heavy price for stealing battery

Kota Kinabalu: A 23-year-old man who claimed he is suffering from tuberculosis (TB) was jailed 14 months and fined RM2,000 in default two months' jail for stealing a car battery worth RM100.Mohd Ruzali Ag Basri pleaded guilty before Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus to the charge against him on Wednesday.

He stole the car battery belonging to one Kennie Anthony at 2.30pm on Apr 6 this year at a house in Kg Nabangkung, Penampang.

The offence under Section 379 of the Penal Code provides for a jail term of up to seven years and a fine, on conviction.

In his mitigation, Mohd Ruzali asked for a light sentence saying that he is a TB patient and also has parents depending on him.

The court heard that on that day Kennie found his house gate open and after checking, found that his car battery was missing.

Through the CCTV at the house, Kennie saw a man later identified as Mohd Ruzali enter the house and steal the battery.

Meanwhile, Mohd Ruzali was also handed another six months' jail for taking syabu.

His urine tested positive for drugs on the day he was arrested.

The court ordered Mohd Ruzali to serve the jail sentence concurrently and after completing the jail sentence, he is to be placed under police supervision for two years.

Inspector Rasydan Jasni prosecuted.

In another court, two men and a woman were jailed four months each for entering the State illegally.

They were Asmady Abdul Asiri, Hisyam Norahman and Joceyln Olam Repdos.

Asmady and Hisyam were also given a stroke of the cane each. They were ordered referred to the Immigration Department upon completing their jail sentence. - Cynthia D Baga
