Thai women thought offering sex is legal

Kota Kinabalu: Four women from Thailand who said they did not know offering sex is illegal in Malaysia, were sentenced to 10 months' jail each on Thursday.Wipa Wisedpeng, 37, Montita Supopak, 38, Wilaiporn Nonsiri, 30, and Nattaya Papolngam, 22, pleaded guilty separately before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun to soliciting for prostitution in hotels in the city and in Penampang between Aug 13 and Aug 27.The charges were read to them in Thai through an interpreter.

The four, who were not represented, requested for a fine as it was their first offence in the country. They said they did not know engaging in such activity was not legal here.Jessica, however, told them that prostitution cases in the State have been frequent and such excuses of not knowing the laws of Malaysia cannot be used."The moment you are here you have to know the laws," said Jessica, who then ordered them to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving the sentence.

Inspector Rasydan Jasni, prosecuting, urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence.The four had committed an offence under Section 372B of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to one year or fine, or both, on conviction.

In another case, a workshop worker was jailed two months for shoplifting.Liew Ching Chun, 47, admitted to stealing a can of ghee oil, a packet of instant coffee and two bars of detergent, worth a total of RM50, at Chua Kah Seng supermarket in Donggongon town, Penampang at 1.25pm on Sept 3.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

Liew, who was not represented, said he stole the items because he had no money and requested for a lenient sentence saying he has two children. He was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and liable to a fine on conviction. - Jo Ann Mool
