Tawau: The Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) on Saturday launched a hassle-free parking solution mobile application called "JomParking" to facilitate owners to park their vehicles in the district without having to purchase coupons. Its President Alijus Sipil said the application, the first of such in Sabah, was now available for download for free via Apple App Store or Google Play.

"The users can pay the parking charges anytime without having to be at the (designated) parking zone at that particular time. If they run out of tokens, then the users can top up online or via registered agents," he told reporters after the launch of the application by Sabah Resource Development and Information Technology Assistant Minister Datuk Hamisa Samat.

Meanwhile, Alijus said the MPT would temporarily close down "tahfiz" (Quran memorisation) centres in the district without the Certificate of Completion and Compliance by the Fire and Rescue Department as well as those which were deemed as high-risk, for a certain period of time as determined by the department.

"We will call up (tahfiz) operators who are found to have not complied with the building occupancy requirements and advise them on the safety compliance.

"However, if the premises do not comply with the conditions and at risk of fire, then there is no other way than to close down these centres temporarily until the requirements are met for the sake of all parties," he said.

Last Thursday, 21 students and two teachers of Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah Religious Residential Centre in Kuala Lumpur perished in the 5.15am fire after they were trapped in the building.

It was reported that the school building had yet to receive the certificate.
