Kota Kinabalu: Labour issues are very important in the development of a nation as they can enhance the economy as well as social stability. With this in mind, the Human Resources Ministry, through the Sabah Labour Department, held its first Sabah Labour Convention 2017 to improve people's knowledge and understanding of our labour policies and laws.

"Exposure and understanding of our national labour laws and policies enables harmony in the industry to be guaranteed, involving multiple parties – policy holders, implementers, employers, employees and the people as a whole," said Sabah Labour Department Deputy Director Muhamad Fauzi Abd Ghani in his speech when officiating the one-day convention at Tabung Haji Hotel, here, Tuesday.

"If we look at the relationship between the Labour Department and job seekers, focus is not only on the job seekers until they obtain employment but also on providing advisory services and negotiations after they work.

"This is besides the enforcement of the Sabah Labour Ordinance (Chapter 67) that protects the rights of workers and employers in the State," he said.

He said the Ministry, through the Social Security Organisation (Socso), has also implemented a "Return to Work" programme which proves its commitment in empowering the country's labour force.

"This programme is a comprehensive rehabilitation programme implemented on the basis of a biopsychosocial concept of multidisciplinary approach that aims to assist insured people to recover and return to work.

"Since the programme was launched in 2007, Socso has helped more than 16,467 workers across the country to return to work," he added. The Ministry, through the Human Resource Development Berhad, has also set up 1Malaysia Outplacement Centre (1MOC).

He said the one-stop centre targets retrenched Malaysian workers to reduce their burden by providing advice on career counselling and planning.

"It also provides a platform for job matching and training to prepare them for their next career," he explained.

Last year, a total of 1,604 workers in the country who were retrenched registered in the 1MOC Portal.

Of the figure, 810 people have obtained new jobs, while 769 employees are currently undergoing training and 435 with the necessary skills are being assisted by counsellors and job placement teams to obtain jobs offered in the market.

"The Government, especially the Sabah Labour Department, is committed to ensuring a comprehensive effort through the various programmes that are set up on a proper basis," he said.

The convention was attended by 300 participants from departments and agencies under the Human Resources Ministry, employers, trade unions and institutions of higher learning. - Sherell Jeffrey
