Kota Kinabalu: A 30-year-old was jailed five years and ordered to be given two strokes of the cane for robbing a tourist from China of his smartphone.Sessions Court Judge Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim handed the sentence to Radmi Muhammad who changed his plea and pleaded guilty to the charge against him, Wednesday, which was supposed for trial.

Radmi robbed one Lin Wenji of the smartphone at 8.40pm on Sept 8, 2017 at a bus stop near Kolej Teknikal Yayasan Sabah, in Tanjung Aru.

The offence under Section 392 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 14 years and whipping, on conviction.

The court ordered Radmi to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest.

In mitigation, Radmi, who was not represented, asked for leniency saying he has a child and a mother to look after.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Dinesh Raja urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence on the grounds that Radmi had committed a serious offence against a tourist.

The court heard that while Lin was at the bus stop, an unknown man later identified as Radmi had approached him and grabbed his smartphone.

Radmi then fled but a policeman who was at the area managed to detain him.
