M'sian cricket squad eye promotion to WCL 3

Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian cricket squad would be banking on home ground advantage at the 2018 ICC World Cricket League (WCL) Division Four, to secure promotion to WCL 3.The national side must claim the top two spots at the six-nation tournament scheduled from April 29 to May 6 to secure their berth to the third division, after being demoted to WCL 4 when they finished fifth in the previous edition.

However, Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA) general manager (cricket operations) M. Dinesh, is confident the national side powered by new coach Sampath Perera of Sri Lanka, has high hopes of advancing into the finals.

"Our target is get back into WCL 3 and our chances are high by playing on home soil and only Uganda is ranked above us. Sampath took charge of the team as interim coach during our Sri Lanka Tour in January and is now preparing the squad for the WCL 4. "We hope he will give an impact at this tournament," he said.

Ranked 26th in the world, Malaysia would start the WCL 4 campaign against world number 25, Uganda on April 29, before playing Vanuatu on April 30 at the Kinrara Oval, Puchong and Denmark (ranked 27th) on May 2 at UKM Oval, Bangi.

The 2017 SEA Games champions (50 overs) would next play two matches at the Royal Selangor Club here, against Jersey on May 3 and Bermuda on May 5. – Bernama
