Kota Kinabalu: Priority for repair and maintenance will be given to the Luyang Health Clinic which serves a critical role in healthcare for city dwellers. State Health and People's Wellbeing Minister Stephen Wong said the clinic would be given priority in the government budget under his ministry.

"Many facilities at the Luyang Health Clinic have broken down and this is not conducive for staff as well as patients who are growing in numbers.

"I was informed by the staff that the clinic's leaking roof has been a longstanding issue and no maintenance works have been carried out for nearly two decades since the clinic started operating in 1999.

"The roof leakage has damaged several air-conditioning units in the clinic and puddles of water will often appear at the dental waiting area after a downpour.

"This is inappropriate for a government facility that needs to serve more than 200 patients every day," he said.

Wong added that the building has not been properly maintained for 20 years and this led to many basic facilities becoming outdated and problems unresolved such as holes in the roof.

"As a result, water leakage exists all over the hospital building which lead to short circuits," said Wong, who was accompanied by Luyang Assemblyman Phoon Jin Tze, to the media during a visit to the clinic on Saturday.

Wong said he would seriously look into the problems and resolve them as soon as possible for the sake of the staff as well as patients.

During the visit, Wong also found that potholes have resurfaced despite multiple efforts in the past to repave and repair the road within the clinic area.

"The situation is caused by the sinking of the entire facility as the clinic was built on a swampy area," he said.

Other than that, Wong also found that the clinic also faced insufficient parking space, flooding and stagnant water whenever it rained. - Cynthia D Baga
