Zaharah is Chief Judge of Malaya

Putra Jaya: Federal Court judge Zaharah Ibrahim today assumed the post of Chief Judge of Malaya, the second woman to hold the position – after a lapse of 11 years.Siti Norma Yaakob held that post from 2005 to 2007.

Zaharah, 65, took her oath of office before the most senior High Court judge Su Geok Yiam at the Palace of Justice.

Among those present to witness the event were Court of Appeal President Ahmad Maarop, Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak David Wong Dak Wah and Attorney-General Tommy Thomas.

Last week the Conference of Rulers confirmed the nominations of Chief Justice Richard Malanjum, Ahmad, Zaharah and Wong. Malanjum, Ahmad and Wong took their oath of office last week. Zaharah was overseas then.

Zaharah, who has been a Federal Court judge since 2015, started her career in the judicial and legal service in 1977.

She served in various positions, including as deputy parliamentary draftsman at the Attorney-General's Chambers and Selangor legal adviser, before being appointed a judicial commissioner in 1996.
