Kota Belud: State Lands and Surveys Department raided a sand-dredging and stockpiling site at Kg Rangalau, here, Wednesday. Its Director Datuk Safar Untong said two enforcement teams were deployed to the site around 11am upon receiving confirmation from the Kota Belud Land Office that the licence of the sanddredging operator had expired at the end of last year. He said the operator concerned had applied for renewal of the licence.

However, Safar said, their application for renewal was put on hold temporarily, in line with the instruction by State Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Junz Wong to freeze renewal of all sanddredging licences in Kota Belud pending a study and review by the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID). "Our enforcement team warned the operator concerned not to carry out any activity, including stockpile clearing, pending further instruction from the Government. When our enforcement team reached the site on Wednesday, they were uploading and clearing their stockpile. Therefore, our enforcement team seized one unit of shovel machine and two lorries to facilitate investigations," he said, in a statement, Wednesday. Safar said the teams also lodged a police report in regard to the raid and seizure of items from the site. He said an investigation paper (IP) will be opened once all necessary information have been obtained. "We will work closely with DID pertaining to the sand-dredging issue," he said.
