Record-setting Albright vows to give his best
Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's Albright Chong will be setting an unprecedented Sukma Games record with the most number of appearances as he steps onto the green on the first day of the golf individual event at the Royal Perak Golf Club today (Saturday). This will be the 21-year-old's fifth and final appearance in the biennial games since he first made his debut in Melaka in 2010.

Then, as the youngest player in the team at the tender age of 13, he was one of the reserves with 14-year-old Fazley Chua when the team won bronze through Chin Jun Nien, Lam Yu Shien and Alex Lau in the team event.

His second outing in Pahang at the 16th Sukma Games was the highlight for the Kota Kinabalu lad when he won the individual gold medal as well as helping his teammates comprising of Fazley, Jordan Mobijohn, Solomon Rosidin to win the team gold as well.

That year was also a historic outing for the State golf contingent as the girls dominated the individual and team event too, with Aretha Pan winning the individual gold and team gold with Diana Tham, Vivien Chin and Hilferah Tan.

In his swansong outing this time around, Albright will be joined by his youngest sister Charlayne who had just won back to back titles at the Labuan and Kudat Amateur Open recently, and she also had just been slotted into the National Team last month. When contacted, Albright who is in the seventh semester with University Utara Malaysia promised to give his best to the State.

"My priorities is my studies but I will give my best as this Sukma is my last upon reaching the age of 21. It has been a fantastic journey for me and I hope more juniors will come up to take over the gap left by us. We were once the most feared State in the golfing scene and it is my wish to see we can regain our status in the very near future," he said.

Meanwhile, Albright will team up with Casper Loh, Christopher James and Neil Edmund Bainon for the men's event while Charlayne has the company of Jacqueline Nickels and Tham Soot Yuet in the ladies event.
