DAP leaders cannot apply for lands, projects
Kota Kinabalu: Sabah DAP leaders are not allowed to apply for government lands or get involved in government projects. Sabah DAP supports the leadership of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed as Prime Minister and the Sabah Government of Datuk Seri Panglima Shafie Apdal as Chief Minister.

All DAP leaders elected into public offices are to declare their assets.

These are among the resolutions tabled and passed during the Sabah DAP held its State level Convention 2018 which was conducted prominently in Bahasa Malaysia with elections for various office bearer posts in the party for the tenure 2018 to 2020, on Sunday Nov 25.

The event starting from 10am at the Kian Kok High School Hall was a celebration by the multi-racial membership of the party forming the Federal and Sabah governments.

In Sabah, DAP won three parliamentary seats and six State Assembly seats, according to Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament Chan Foong Hin who is State DAP secretary.

Chan gave an account of DAP Sabah activities for the previous year to the time after the party formed the coalition government.

It was officiated by DAP National Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng who in the past was against party leaders accepting 'Datukship' and other titles prior to retirement. Lim delivered his speech in Malay and left shortly before noon.

Sabah DAP Chairman Stephen Wong in his speech said that "the 2018 convention, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the party's political activism in Sabah, was special as it was for the first time Sabah DAP was no longer in the opposition, but is part of the Sabah Government."

He thanked all who had worked hard in the 14th General Election to realise this New Malaysia.

"Since 1978, it has been a tough journey for Sabah DAP, but we never gave up. We had won four parliamentary seats and also lost all seats, but the people's support for DAP made it possible for Sabah DAP to rule Sabah as a second largest Pakatan Harapan party in the Sabah Government in the coalition together with Parti Warisan Sabah and Upko.

"We are conscious of our responsibility to always serve the people with honesty and sincerity.

"Let us never forget our principled struggle for the people who made our success possible to forge a harmonious multiracial and multi-religious society despite many challenges posed to divide and disunite the people who deserved the dignity to a just, non-discriminatory and equal opportunity lifestyle with others in Malaysia.

"In the last election, we attained a 90 per cent success rate winning nine seats out of 10 contested, losing only Bingkor State constituency in Keningau. Don't lose hope. We will continue to win the hearts and minds of the people there.

"We are aware that without electoral support from Sabah and Sarawak to win over Putrajaya, Barisan Nasional would still rule over us. We must appreciate this fact that we managed to exceed our target of 10 parliamentary seats and we are thankful for a miracle from the people who provide Pakatan Harapan and Parti Warisan Sabah 14 MPs with another 10 from Sarawak totalling 24 parliamentary seats from East Malaysia to form a new Federal government to usher in a New Malaysia."

Among the other resolutions include the restoration of the status of Sabah and Sarawak as equal partners as stated in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and associated devolution of powers, economic development, high income employment opportunities, lower costs of living, security, rural development, healthcare, education and customary land rights to be resolved or attained.

There were 101 eligible voting delegates to participate in the Sabah DAP election for 15 Executive Committee seats. Present to collect ballot papers were 95 delegates and all 95 votes were returned. However, there were five spoilt votes, rendering each candidate for the 15 seats, a possible maximum of 90 votes.

There were 18 candidates vying for the 15 seats. One candidate Vincent Fung Sze Zack pulled out of the contest (he still obtained 28 votes), while Elopura Assemblyman Calvin Chong Ket Kiun (36 votes) and Jimmy Wong Sze Phin's son Justin Wong Yung Bin (43 votes) who replaced his father in the bid for Executive Committee membership did not make the cut.

Elected with full 90 votes were Noorita Sual, Tan Lee Fatt, Phoong Jin Zhe, Loh Ee Eng and Henry Shim Chee On. They were followed by Poon Ming Fung (89 votes), Jannie Lasimbang (88 votes), Odom @ Peter Dhorms Saili @ Soili (86 votes), Tsen Ngee @ Tsen Nyuk Kee (85 votes), George Wong Hsueh Cheng (85 votes), Adrian Lasimbang (80 votes), Wong Tien Fatt @ Wong Nyuk Foh (68 votes), Liew Yun Yun (68 votes), Chan Foong Hin (67 votes), and Liew Chan Hang (58 votes).

These 15 poll victors determined the appointment of Sabah DAP office bearers.

Minister of Health and People's Well-Being Stephen Wong Tien Fatt was returned as the Sabah DAP Chairman. He reappointed Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Jimmy Wong Sze Phin as Sabah DAP advisor approved by the members of the Executive Committee.

Sport and Youth Minister Poon Ming Fung was voted in as Sabah DAP's deputy chairman with two vice chairpersons – Tenom MP Noorita and Odom.

Chan and Likas Assemblyman Tan were returned as the secretary and assistant secretary respectively.

Ronnie was returned as treasurer, as was Henry and Chan Hang as the organisation secretary and assistant respectively.

Luyang assemblyman Phoong was returned as the publicity secretary as so was Senator Adrian as political education director.

Voted into the Executive Committee were Tsen, Kee, Yun Yun, Wanita Chief Jannie and George Wong.

Co-opted into the committee were Justin, Clare @ Carolyn Tony Simbat@ Taunek, Max Million Lee Yun Vui, Gralydia Gillod, and Puan Mei Chan.

DAP as a political party stressed that it has always upheld the Federal Constitution, including its provisions involving Malays, Bumiputras, Muslims and Malay rulers.

Lim had cautioned the people to be wary of extremists trying to stoke tensions among using the issue of the ratification of a UN rights treaty – the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).

Lim responded to defamatory allegations by insisting that the party had never raised the issue. He said the allegations were aimed at brewing hatred.

He said: "I think people know that the issue (surrounding ICERD) was not raised by DAP. Who are the ones who raised it? It wasn't us."

"They are trying to flare up racial sentiments, we have never raised this issue, and certain quarters are trying to link to this issue for their own political reasons."

The event came in the midst of some political demonstrations around West Malaysia and also a handful in Sabah over a proposal for Malaysia to ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).

Putrajaya's decision last Friday not to ratify the global anti-discrimination treaty has taken the momentum out of the opposition PAS and Umno agitating for more demonstrations against ICERD.

DAP left it to the police to act upon hundreds of police reports made in recent days linked to the controversy over ICERD, although Lim reserves the right to take legal action against defamatory statements. - David Thien
