Grandis Hotel bullish on occupancy
Kota Kinabalu: The 108-room Grandis Hotel here is bullish about next year's business prospects as far as its occupancy rate is concerned.Deputy General Manager Chung Keh Vee said the hotel is enjoying an average of 90pc occupancy.

"Bookings normally peak in summer. If you ask me about the hotel's outlook for 2019, I would say it appears to be positive for the first quarter economically speaking," he said during a courtesy call on Deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Christina Liew.

According to Chung, Grandis Hotel is also banking on, among other sectors, the small and medium scale MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) segment and on the MICE domestic market.

Strategic location (as part of the Suria Sabah Shopping Mall) and its proximity to the Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal give the Hotel a competitive edge over other establishments. It is reportedly an ideal spot for viewing the radiant sunrise and sunset.

"I am glad to hear that you are faring well in the tourism industry with Chinese tourist arrivals patronising Grandis Hotel. I believe you will notch a bigger success next year," said Liew.

The Minister anticipates a tourism boom, come Chinese New Year that will be marked by an increase of flights into Sabah, especially charter flights from China. She disclosed that China's largest TV Production Company is coming to shoot images of our mountains, islands and beaches as well as capture our rich cultural heritage for a documentary on Beautiful Sabah.

"Imagine the huge interest it will generate once the documentary is screened in China. I am optimistic that hotels in KK and on the east coast will have full occupancy during the Spring Festival and the ensuing months," she enthused.

On why the celebration will be one with a difference this time around, Liew said the State capital will play host to the first Sabah International Lantern Festival and Folk Art Festival in Tanjung Aru that will showcase a myriad of lanterns.

She hoped tour operators would arrange for hotel guests and tourist arrivals to visit the not-to-be-missed lantern festival.

Also present were the hotel's Director of Sales & Marketing, Evangeline Tseu, Sales Manager Salinah Masuari and Sales Coordinator Leonnie Chang Kai Juan.
