Case of telco  manager linked to IS set for re-mention
Kota Kinabalu: The Sessions Court set Jan 24 next year for re-mention of the case involving a 40-year-old manager of telco company in Sabah charged with four counts of having materials related to the Islamic State (IS) group and contributing financial to the group.Judge Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim fixed the date for Salahuddin Abd Latif when his case was brought up for mention on Friday.

Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Megat Mahathir Megat Tharih Afendi informed the court that relevant documents pertaining to the case were not ready yet and that he applied for a new mention date.

During the proceedings, counsel Nelson Anggang, who defended Salahuddin, said he needed the documents as soon as possible as he wanted to write in a representation letter.

On the first count, he is accused of having materials relating to IS group at 6.20am on Oct 26 this year at a house in Taman Mawar, Jalan Spur Kinarut, Papar.

The offence under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to seven years, or a fine, and liability to forfeiture of any such items, on conviction.

On the second to fourth counts, Salahuddin allegedly supported the IS group by banking-in RM300, RM300 and RM1,000, into an account under the name of Syarikat Multi Point Trading belonging to one Firdaus Asren Saputra at the same place on May 18, Apr 4 and July 4, 2016.

The charges stated that Salahuddin knew that the money would be used in implementing militant activities.

For the offence, he could be punished with a jail term of between seven and 30 years, and with fine, and the properties involved could be seized, if convicted under Section 130N(b) of the Penal Code.

So far, no plea was taken from Salahuddin when he was brought to court to face the charge against him on Nov 21 this year.

Pending the date, Salahuddin was ordered remanded further. - Cynthia D Baga
