Sabah Sports Council to assist SSGA
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Sports Council (MSN) will assist Sabah State Gymnastic Association (SSGA) in the absence of Japanese coach Misaki Sakon, who is set to leave in June this year.

The 26-year-old has been working with SSGA at Likas Sports Complex since August 2017 as a volunteer worker under Japanese International Cooperation Agency (Jica) where her contract ends at the end of June.

Newly appointed MSN director Asneh Mohd Noor was informed of the coach’s departure when Misaki, accompanied by SSGA president Dr Judy Mahibol, paid a courtesy call on him at his office recently.

Asneh assured the State body that MSN will try their very best to ensure SSGA’s programme will not be interrupted as a result of Misaki’s departure.

“We will try our best to help the association so that the programme set up by Misaki will not be affected. I have observed her training when I was with the Sports Board and I know there is a pool of athletes under her since her arrival here and it will be a pity if there is no follow up or continuity as a result of her departure,” he said.

Meanwhile, Judy said the association will continue to improve gymnastics as well as creating more opportunities for the locals in the sport, and she also disclosed that they have made an application for a successor to continue Misaki’s legacy.

“We are certainly very pleased to hear MSN will help us in the interim period before the arrival of Misaki’s replacement , as it will take some time before we can get another coach under Jica.

She disclosed that Jica was first introduced to them through Tan Sri Sukarti Wakiman (the former State secretary) in 2015. They were the first in the country to make a request for a gymnastics coach from Jica and it was only after two years, before Misaki was dispatched to Sabah in 2017.

Judy also expressed her gratitude to MSN and Sabah Sports Board for their support by providing Misaki’s working space and all the technical help since her arrival. - GL Oh
