100 competitors expected for Ruhiang/Kiulu Adventure Challenge

Kota Kinabalu: Some 100 participants are expected to compete at the Ruhiang/Kiulu Adventure Challenge 2011, which is happening this Sunday at Ruhiang Hill, Kiulu.The event, which is jointly organised by the Tamparuli and Kiulu Assemblyman Offices, would see participants running uphill, cycling, crossing rivers, slingshot shooting and doing merampanau (walking on bamboo stilts) to cover an overall distance of 30-40km.

"The merampanau event was introduced to promote traditional games to the participants," said organising spokesman, Steve Datuk Johnny Mositun, yesterday.

He also revealed several new challenges that newcomers would contest namely the Ride for the Nature and Fun Run events, which require participants to dress up as creative as possible for the run.

"This is aimed at generating awareness about the environment and the beauty of Tamparuli such as its clean river and green forest," Steve said.

Some of the favourites to win the challenge include the likes of Guainus Salagan, Amadul, as well as Jusry, who is representing the Armed Forces.

"These three participants are among the notable athletes that will be competing in the singles event," said Steve.

He said some national and State riders would also be competing.

Assistant Youth and Sports Minister, Datuk Jahid Jahim and Sabah Sports Board Chairman, Datuk Louis Rampas are expected to officiate at the launching (7.30am, March 13), while Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, Datuk Masidi Manjun will officiate at the closing (3pm the same day) and present prizes to the winners.

All participants are reminded to register themselves at the SEDCO Building next to the river in Tamparuli Town on March 12.

"Registration will be open from 1pm to 4pm, where participants will receive their tournament numbers as well as the official T-shirt for the race," said Steve.

Apart from just the Race, the event will also incorporate ground activities for everyone to enjoy.

"Suria FM Deejay, DJ Othoe, will be there to handle all the fun.

There will be quizes and other exciting activities including traditional games and exhibitions.

Among the activities will be a paragliding exhibition and performances by local artists.
