Labuan: There will be no cheers for smokers at Tiara Hotel's "Cheers Pub". The management has banned smoking in the pub and is promoting the move with the slogan "Let's Get Healthier."This is the first to do so out of the 40-odd entertainment outlets on the duty-free island where booze and fags are cheap and popular among revellers.
"The hotel first introduced the Go-Green Initiative by banning smoking on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays several months ago before taking the step to ban it totally," said the Managing Director of the hotel, Chai Tse Khee.
He said a no-smoking policy in pubs has been implemented in many countries.
"It is nothing new. Like any other decision, such a move may please some and displease some.
But smokers could always take their puff at the alfresco poolside garden, an open-air food and beverage outlet located outside the pub."
Chai also said many non-smokers would appreciate a smoke-free pub to prevent second-hand smoke and having no smoke smell on their shirts, etc.
It is also healthy for the staff who have to inhale second-hand smoke almost daily during working hours.
A non-smoker, Jennifer Leem, who occasionally enjoys the company of friends and the live music at the cosy Cheers Pub, said with the smoke-free condition "I would now frequent the pub more often."
