Call for Tarakan Embassy office

Tawau: The Indonesian Government has proposed that the Malaysian government open an Embassy office in Tarakan, East Kalimantan, to promote economic growth and diplomatic ties.Indonesian Consul in Tawau, Muhammad Salih, said, it would provide an added value of cooperation in all fields.According to him, there are many useful things that have not been fully explored between the two sides, even though Tawau-Tarakan is getting close, especially with the establishment of direct flights every day.

"Tawau's strategic position as a location so close to Indonesia should be used because of the distance and time that could open vast opportunities in various fields to be developed," he said. He was speaking to reporters after a diplomatic reception to commemorate the 67th anniversary of Indonesia's Independence at the consul's official residence at Wisma Indonesia, on Sunday.Also present was Sabah Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin and his wife Toh Puan Norlidah Datuk RM Jasni, Assistant Finance Minister Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan, Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) President Datuk Ismail Mayakob, Mayor of Tarakan Udin Hianggio, Kota Kinabalu Consul Soepeno Sahid, elected representatives and heads of department/state and federal agencies.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

In the meantime, Muhammad stated that the official opening of the Indonesian Consulate's official residence in Tawau was a pivotal moment as a sign that the Tawau Consulate is no longer a branch of the Kota Kinabalu Consulate."It is now on par with the Indonesia Consulate in Kota Kinabalu, thus making Sabah the only state in Malaysia that has two embassy offices of Indonesia ... we've been waiting 12 years to see our office in Tawau upgraded into a main office, "he said.
