Kota Kinabalu: A 47-year-old woman is under investigation following claims that she had abused her three grandchildren, aged between three and nine. Deputy City Police Chief Supt M. Chandra said she was detained on Tuesday after a 59-year-old woman, who stayed in the same area lodged a report at 10.30am the same day, after a neighbour told her about the three siblings who were constantly beaten.

He said the incident allegedly took place between 9am and 10am on Tuesday at Taman Jaya Diri, Sepanggar, involving three siblings, a nine-year-old girl, eight-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl.

"Investigations showed that the siblings stayed with their grandmother who claimed that she beat them with a wooden ruler because they misbehaved," he said, adding that their mother is currently serving time in prison for drug abuse, while their father, also a drug addict, could not be traced.

He said the siblings have been brought to the hospital where early medical reports found fresh and old bruises on their bodies.

"We believe they have been under the care of their grandmother for about one or two months and are still being warded at the hospital for medical review.

"It is most likely that they will be referred to the Welfare Department since their mother is still serving time and their father could not be found," he said.
