Burial ground 'encroached in Ramayah'
PENAMPANG: A KadazanDusun burial ground at Kg Ramayah, here, has been allegedly encroached by a housing developer ever since clearing work to build a road began. A resident, Lesley, 44, claimed up to 30 graves comprising "tajaus" or jars buried on the cemetery land many decades ago were damaged and disturbed by the work.

He said the authority had gazetted the burial ground.

"I had informed the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) Chairman of Kg Ramayah about the project that will trespass the burial ground.

"He responded that a meeting will be held with the villagers to come up with a decision on the urgent matter. He was supposed to inform us about the date of the meeting.

"However, I was shocked to see the clearing work intrude the burial ground and damage some of the graves where some 'tajaus' were broken and human bones can be seen," he said, Thursday.

Lesley said he had stopped the clearing work done by a road contractor since last week as he had obtained instruction from the developer.

However, the developer claimed to have received approval from the locals through a meeting conducted by community leaders to allow the project.

"Therefore, I am surprised how such land clearing work could be carried when clearly a meeting was yet to be held."

Lesley, who had stayed in the village since young, lamented that such intrusion on burial ground showed no respect to the local communities here and urged the villagers to come forward and check whether their ancestors graves were affected.

He hoped that the concerned community leader and authorities would take immediate and appropriate action to address the matter.
