RAWANG: The religious status of a Nigerian buried in a Christian Cemetery here has also turned the spotlight on the legal status of the burial site. The cemetery in Batu Arang where the alleged Muslim Nigerian was buried has not been gazetted as a cemetery yet.

Gombak district officer Datuk Nor Hisham Dahlan said the 0.69ha land which is claimed as a Christian cemetery actually belongs to the government.

"Officially, the land is not gazetted yet to be a cemetery but we will look into this issue and help it to be gazetted for Christians here," added Nor Hisham. He also said that there will be a meeting between seven agencies including Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS), Selayang Municipal Council (MPS), Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL), National Registration Department (NRD), immigration, police and land officials by next week on further action to be taken on the body of the alleged Muslim foreigner.

Meanwhile, police are now investigating to find out whether the Nigerian man is a Muslim or a Christian.

Gombak district deputy police chief Supt Mohd Hasbullah Ali said police have started investigations to find out his religion and to ascertain who was behind this matter.

"We are suspicious of who had authorised the burial without informing us that he carried two fake passports," said Mohd Hasbullah.

"As for now, we have to get confirmation from the embassy and immigration on his passports and it will take time," added Mohd Hasbullah.

Initial investigation revealed that the Nigerian, whose name was Taufik Abdul Daud, has a nephew studying in Puchong and he claimed that Taufik had converted to Christianity when he was in Nigeria.

Mohd Hasbullah added that police will immediately deploy an officer to check on every foreigner who is to be buried there.

The issue was first highlighted by theSun yesterday when one of the residents of Batu Arang, T. Julius Caesar, who is the Indian Progressive Front (IPF) branch chairman, lodged a police report on Monday alleging that a non-Muslim cemetery is being used as a "dumping ground" for unclaimed bodies, including foreigners.
