200 Pulau Gaya women join Amanita programme

KOTA KINABALU: Women at Pulau Gaya had the chance to get close and personal with the Amanita (Peace Lady) Kota Kinabalu Police Department during a crime prevention campaign here.Some 200 women from three villages, namely Kg. Pulau Gaya, Kg. Kesuapan and Kg. Lok Urai showed up for the two-hour campaign held at the Kg. Kesuapan Community Hall.They were briefed on the roles they can play to ensure neighbourhood safety and crime prevention.

The women were also entertained with dances and a 10-minute sketch performed by members of the Happy-Happy Mothers Club from Taman Jaya Diri in Menggatal who were also present. The Happy-Happy Mothers Club led by its Chairperson Marianna Abdullah and Amanita Focus Point Ann Abd Hamid have engaged with Amanita for the past two years and were invited to the campaign to encourage more involvement from women on the island. Meanwhile, Kg. Pulau Gaya Village Chief Saimah Abdul Salam thanked the Kota Kinabalu Police Department for conducting the Amanita programme on the island. "Since the Eastern Sabah Security Command set up a police beat here, social ills such as glue sniffing, have gone down and with Amanita here, we hope more residents, particularly women would engage in crime prevention activities," said Saimah who has been a village chief for the past ten years.

She said it was the first time such programme was held in Kg. Kesuapan and hoped Amanita would also be extended to other villages on the island. ASP Kamala Lydia Narayansamy who is in charge of the Amanita Kota Kinabalu Police Department said the objective was to strengthen ties with the community, particularly women as well as to encourage them to be the eyes and ears of the police force.
