Man to go on trial in January for murder

KOTA KINABALU: A 45-year-old local Chinese charged with the murder of a man in Donggongon, Penampang will go on trial in January next year.High Court Judge Chew Soo Ho set Jan 5, 6, 20-23 for the trial of Lim Tiam Chye.Lim is accused of murdering one Yagon Ubit @ Egon A. Ubit, 59, at 12.45pm on Aug 10 2012, in front of Restoran Mazuin, at Donggongon.

He had claimed trial to the charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code which carries the death sentence on conviction.Earlier, counsel YS Lo, who stood in for counsel Ram Singh, informed the court that representation had been made twice by the defence but was rejected.The prosecution is expected to call around 15 witnesses in the trial.Deputy Public Prosecutor Afzan Abd Kahar appeared for the prosecution.

In the Magistrate's Court, a 36-year-old jobless man was sentenced to seven months' jail for theft.Mohd Nazir Mahamuda admitted before Magistrate Mohd Faiz Omar to stealing a bag containing four handphones, RM150 cash and a MyKad from a car parked in front of the Asia Inn, Kg Air here.
