UNFLAGGING efforts and steadfast self-motivation were some of the keys to achieving 5As for two SK Sri Gaya pupils in their Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) 2014 examination.Joseph Chang, the eldest of five, attributed his success to the dedication and unfailing support he received from teachers and his parents.

"I'm very happy with my results. My parents were very supportive, they did not put pressure on me to score.

"Everyday after school, my mother would gather my siblings and I to do our school work together. She's also a tuition teacher so I didn't need to go for tuition. If I needed help, I will just ask her."

Chang who plans to be a footballer if not a writer when he grows up said he likes English, for the simple reason that he is good at it.

His mother, Charmine Andrea Wong, 44, a Universiti Putra Malaysia Phd student said she was holding back tears when her son received his result certificate.

"My husband and I taught our children very young to be self motivating. We taught them to be independent learners and life-long learners. We don't want them just stop learning at school.

"He loves reading and learning new things, I hope his younger siblings will follow suit."

Meanwhile, Sara Umaira, another top scorer, did plenty of extra classes and tuition at night to prepare for the exam.

"My mother would always ask me what I did in school and what I learned, then make me do my school work first before I can watch TV.

"She is my biggest supporter and motivator. My sister, a 5A student as well, also motivated me to score well."

Sara said her favourite subject at school was mathematics and aspires to be a civil engineer when she grows up.

Her mother, housewife, Zuraidah Gulistan, said she was very anxious waiting for the results. "I couldn't sleep at night. I was so worried for her. But she was fine, I think I was worrying more than she did!"

Joseph and Sara were among the 44,427 candidates nationwide who sat for their UPSR examination in September. They were also among the 37 candidates in SK Sri Gaya who scored 5A's the UPSR exam.

Headmaster of SJK (c) Chung Hwa, Datuk Eng Thiam Leong, whose school had 36 candidates scoring 7A's in the government-aided school category said the success of his school is not solely attributed to the school but to everyone involved.

"Like every other school, we provide extra classes, motivational camps and have special classes to teach the students how to correctly answer the questions, which I feel helped a lot with the students.

"I thank all teachers, parents and students in their dedication and efforts to the school's achievement. We would have not achieved this without the help of everyone's commitment."
