KUALA LUMPUR: A Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department team from Bukit Aman seized RM5.7 million worth of drugs in three operations at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) last week. Deputy Inspector General of Police Datuk Seri Noor Rashid Ibrahim said in the first operation on Saturday, police seized two separate packages which shared one airway bill.

One package contained used clothing while the other, 20.2 kg of syabu.

"Investigations revealed that they were sent from Abuja, Nigeria through EgyptAir to Kuala Lumpur," he told a media conference at Bukit Aman here Wednesday.

In the second operation on Sunday, an Indian national was detained upon arriving from Chennai, India after he was found to be carrying 5.4 kg of Ephedrine in a bag with a reconstructed base.

Noor Rashid said in the third case around 7.20 pm Tuesday night, the team intercepted a box containing syabu weighing 23 kg which were concealed in a special compartment in a bag.

"Investigations revealed that the box had arrived from Abuja, Nigeria via EgyptAir. Police have not dismissed the possibility that the first two cases were orchestrated by the same syndicate.

"We believe the drugs were meant to be smuggled into this country for the local and foreign market," he said, adding that some Nigerians were found to have misused their student pass to carry out drug smuggling activities.

He said investigations were ongoing, under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.-Bernama
