KOTA KINABALU: Police detained a dagger-wielding man who went beserk in front of the Apiwon Restaurant in Sembulan, here, Monday. The man, a local Bajau from Kg Kawang in Papar, is believed to be mentally unsound and was previously admitted to the Mesra Hospital in Bukit Padang.

City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra on Wednesday said a police team went to the scene after receiving a call at about 12.30pm.

The man tried to flee in a Proton Saga vehicle but was apprehended by the team at the same location, leading to the discovery of the dagger, its sheath, three religious books and a wood, in the vehicle.

He was brought to the police station for further investigations. Chandra said preliminary investigations showed the man was the same person seen walking near the Perkasa Roundabout at Jesselton Point on Dec 12.

The dagger-wielding man, clad in singlet and jeans, was seen walking towards Jalan Gaya and Kg Air before heading to Sembulan.

His antics caused worry among the people who circulated the news over social media, especially during the Gaya Christmas Festival, which was being held in the area at that time.
