Turkish national pleads guilty to harbouring 3 Filipino illegals

KOTA KINABALU: A 39-year-old Turkish national pleaded guilty here Wednesday to harbouring three illegal immigrants.However, High Court Deputy Registrar Hafizi Abdul Halim, who sat as a Sessions Court judge, deferred Selami Koc's sentencing to Jan 16 next year.

Selami is accused of permitting the Filipinos, aged between 16 and 29, without valid documents to stay in his premises at 3.30pm on Aug 5 this year at the Kilang Arang in Kg Melugus, Papar.

The offence, under Section 55B(1) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, provides for a fine of between RM10,000 and RM50,000 or up to a year's jail, or both, on conviction.

Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Chow Siang Kong appeared for the prosecution while Selami was represented by counsel Mohd Noor.

In the same court, four men and three women were jailed three and four months each for entering the State illegally.

The court also handed two strokes of the cane to the men and ordered them to serve the jail sentence from the date of their arrest.

They entered the State without any valid documents and were arrested in the City on Dec 16 this year.

After completing their jail sentence, they were ordered to be referred to the Immigration Department.

Meanwhile, a 28-year-old man was jailed 10 months for breaking into a shop.
