FB profile leaves couple in a fix
Kota Kinabalu: A man has found himself in an embarrassing spot after he was made out to be pimping his wife shortly after her photos were downloaded from her Facebook account. Her image was then used in a sex-for-money poster which was then put up in the city, Tuaran and even as far as Tambunan.

The couple went to the authorities for help when the phone calls started coming in from men and things quietened down for a while but started up again early this year.

Mother of two Jellyn, 25, and her husband Ong are now back to having sleepless nights fretting over the next phone call, despite a change in phone numbers.

Their nightmare first came to light when a man forwarded a photo of the poster to Ong, a businessman here.

When the calls started late last year, Ong claimed the posters also had their home address and both their contact numbers on them.

It was not until someone used the same photos for a fake Facebook profile and tried to add him as a friend that the couple finally had enough.

"That's when we decided to lodge a police report and my wife changed her handphone number," said Ong, adding that it was five days after the first call came to his wife on Dec 13, 2014.

Police officers instructed them to contact the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and officers there taught Jellyn how to make her Facebook profile private.

The move was effective for a while before calls again swarmed the couple early this year, according to Jellyn.

They were made to understand a new poster had surfaced elsewhere but knew those responsible no longer had access to newer photos from her FB profile.

"It appears they kept to using the old photos," she said.

Although, the whole episode has not strained their seven-year marriage, it was enough to force Jellyn to quit her job as a SIM card vendor to focus on taking care of their two daughters, aged five and seven.

It also got friends and family talking and questioning them about the matter, she said.

"I am just worried that the situation will worsen and affect my two daughters," said Jellyn who claimed her children have no inkling about what has been going on.

Ong, meanwhile, claimed they had no enemies nor offended anyone in the past, although he recalled that he had to lie to stop someone from borrowing money from him for the umpteenth time.

But, he said the person was incapable of putting his family to shame.

Ong said they lodged a second police report on Feb 19 and hoped the authorities would put a stop to the harassment.

MCMC Director Juslie Ellis, meanwhile, claimed they had received many reports similar to the couple's in the past but said the role of MCMC for now is only limited to providing technical advice to victims.

He said although Facebook users would be able to make private their profiles there are no guarantees their contact details left on their profile will never be compromised.

"I will instruct my men to look into Ong's case and will give him a call soon," he said when contacted.
