Ranau: Speakers' Corner Bundu Tuhan – the first in Sabah and second in Malaysia – was officially launched at the Sedco area here last Saturday by the Bundu Tuhan Trustee Committee Chairman Johnny Ghani. An estimated 200 people, including members of the Bundu Tuhan Social and Recreation Club, students of SMK Bundu Tuhan, teachers and local community gathered at the event.

According to Johnny who was also one of the individuals who had suggested the Speakers' Corner, the idea had come up long ago in order to uphold rights and freedom of speech among the community.

"It also to teach our community to raise their opinions in sequence and to be heard while at the same time educating the speakers to become more responsible with their statements by only speaking the truth," he said.

He said basically, the Speakers' Corner is an open space for public speaking, discussion and debate.

"Speakers are allowed to speak on any subject provided it heeds the law.

"Speakers must respect the nation's law by not touching on the public's sensitivity.

Speakers also not allowed to continue their speech if they disobey the rules or use speech with elements of profanity," he said.

According to the Programme Coordinator Rogers Tiam @ Aloysius who is also a SEED Fellow Member, the programme has received good support since it was started.

"Among our main sponsors were Ranau MP Datuk Dr Ewon Ebin, Kundasang Assemblyman Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam and other individuals. Some organisations were also helping us such as SEED and GS Enterprise Bundu Tuhan.
