Penampang: Running enthusiasts who are interested in trying out off running in the countryside will have the opportunity to try it out when the Terian Trail Challenge 2015 kicks off in the district on Saturday. The event is organised by Sabah Trail Seekers (STS) and supported by Sabah Adventure Challenge.

The course will follow one of STS's signature training routes from Kibambangan Water Resort to the village of Terian.

There are two categories for this race. The 15km race will take runners straight up the side of a 775-metre hill, on a combination of single track and logging roads.

The 24km race will give runners the additional torture or pleasure of climbing the hill twice, with a descent to the village of Terian in between.

According to Terian Trail Challenge 2015 spokesperson Symrus Dimok the objective of the event was to provide an introductory run to draw in new runners and walking options where possible.

"Off road running is growing in popularity with good reason. Its great to leave our busy working lives behind and get out of the city into nature.

"There's more to life than all those fun runs on hard roads and concrete footpaths. It's a chance to promote a healthy lifestyle in people because trail running is suitable for both men and women of all ages.

"Moreover, it's a chance for trail runners to know and experience the Salt Trail which is not widely known and also showcase the village of Kibambangan and Terian.

"It is also a good training ground for those who are participating in the Sabah 'The Most Beautiful Thing' 55km and 100km ultra trail marathon to be held in August.

"Last but not least we hope the villagers will be able to take this opportunity to gain some income by setting up stalls at the finish line." The race will kick off at 6am (25km) and 7am (15km) starting from the Kibambangan Water Resort to Kg Terian.

The first, second and third place male and female in each category will receive a special prize of a Nathan Hydration Bag and a cash award.

Every registered participant will receive a high-quality 2ndSkin Terian Trail Challenge adventure shirt and a Sabah Trail Seekers window decal.

Participants for the race were on hand to pick up their race kit at the Penampang Sports Complex area on Friday afternoon.
