FSC nod for virgin forest reserve in K'batangan

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah has received the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certification for Pin-Supu Forest Reserve (Class VI) – Virgin Jungle Reserve at Sungai Pin in Kinabatangan.The Pin-Supu Forest Reserve, an area of 4,696 hectares at Sungai Pin, Kinabatangan, was recently certified by the SCS Global Services as a well- managed forest, based on the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Principles and Criteria. It has been certified for a period of five years from March 20, 2015 until March 19, 2020.

First gazetted in 1935 as a Class II Commercial Forest Reserve, and further regazetted as a Class VI Virgin Jungle Reserve (VJR) in 1984, the Pin-Supu Forest Reserve is an important part of the Kinabatangan Corridor of Life (K-COL) Initiative, and is placed directly under the administration of the Kinabatangan Forestry District of the Sabah Forestry Department. The primary long term goal of the Pin-Supu management is to halt commercial logging and to focus largely on the conservation and protection of the flora and fauna in the area. The department had also entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with KOPEL Bhd, a community based organisation that encompasses the community of Mukim Batu Puteh, Kinabatangan, to embark on an eco-tourism project, which is a very successful undertaking in generating income to the local population. With the addition of Pin-Supu, the Forestry Department now has four FSC certified forests under its own management amounting to 351,371 hectares.
