KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Tambadaus were quick in their approach to fill in the two vacant foreign import players slots in the team with the signing of former Angola national striker Aguinaldo Veiga Mendes and Turkmenistan international midfielder Ahmet Atayew on Monday.

The two who only arrived days earlier had put pen to paper on the contracts offered in the evening after getting their medical all clear in the afternoon.

Sabah were earlier left with only South Korean defender Park Taesu and Serbian hitman Rodoljub Paunovic as their two foreign imports following the earlier departure of on loan attacking player Luka Milonovic who had since returned to Melaka United and Brazilian striker Luiz Carlos Junior who was released on Sunday.

Sabah Football Association (Safa) acting President Datuk Peter Anthony who was introduced to the two new recruits during the team’s training session at Likas Stadium Monday night hoped with the duo in the team, they will be further strengthen in their quest to gain promotion at the end of the season.

“They have signed with us until the end of the season and their performance will be closely monitored by us throughout the season and if they are good then we will extend them.

“We hope with the signing of these two new players, our attacking front and also our midfield department will be further strengthened and they will be able to help in producing the right results for Sabah,” he said after meeting the players.

He also disclosed that Paunovic’s contract which is set to expire next month has also been extended until the end of the season by the management.

“Paunovic has been playing very well and contributed a lot to the team. He is also very comfortable with the local players so we also decided to extend his contract until the end of the season” he added.

Meanwhile, Peter is pleased with the progress of the team so far this season.

“Since the start of the season, when we first assembled this Tambadaus team, our target was to play in the Super League next season.

“At the moment we are on the right track and if we can maintain our consistency there is a strong possibility that we will play in the Super League next season and also in the Malaysia Cup competition this season.

“There were some weaknesses as well that we had to make the necessary changes but overall I am very satisfied with the combination of the team and management that sees us on the right track to achieve our target,” he said.
