Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s Loo Yie Bing smashed five meet records to capture five gold medals at the 1st Milo Age Group Swimming Championship organised by the Malaysia Swimming Federation (MAS), at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil last weekend.
The 14-year-old SM Sung Siew student from Sandakan competed in the 13-14 age group and won with record times in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle, 100m butterfly and 100m breaststroke events.
The State swimming team consisting of 26 swimmers with 16 boys and 10 girls added another team gold and a record from the 100m relay team of Lovell Wong Hsiao Thang, Yipp Chi Tong, Cheng Ka Man and Thien Oi Yee in the girls 17-25 age group.
They also returned with five silvers with three from Thien Oi Yee in the 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle (17-25 age group), one each from the medley relay team of Yipp Chi Tong, Lovell Wong Hsiao Thang, Janetty John Fabian, Thien Oi Yee (17-25) and Samuel Ng Chong Cheng in the 50m freestyle (15-16) who also won the only bronze in the 100m freestyle.
Sabah Aquatic Sports Association (Sasa) President, Daniel Lee Jun Qi in a statement released on Wednesday congratulated the winning swimmers and also those who achieved their personal best during the competition.
“I hope they would continue to work hard, even more so during these difficult times, with the limited training lanes and hours available.
“I would also like to thank Sabah Sports Council for the continuous support and assistance given to Sasa as well as to all the coaches for their commitment in training and to the parents for being so supportive,” he said.
Daniel, who was elected as council member of MAS and appointed as chairman of open water swimming discipline committee during their annual general meeting last year, also revealed that Sasa are planning to host the 54th SAG (Sabah Age Group) championship in March 2022 pending approval from the relevant authorities.
Meanwhile, Sasa secretary Cynthia Chin said a total of 34 teams competed in this year’s national championship and Sabah contingent was led by team manager Thian Chee Kiun with Elvin Chia as head coach assisted by Benjamin Lee, Sean Goh and June Yap while technical officials were Daniel Lee Jun Qi and Daniel Liew Vui Eik (Sasa treasurer).
