The receipt and the polybag cooking oil.
LABUAN: They are supposed to weigh 1kg but the subsidised cooking oil polybags are found to contain less – 0.985gm or short of 15gm.An insignificant quantity may seem small but if volume used by millions of families is considered, it may amount to tonnes. A consumer named Ah Kin out of curiosity asked for a bag to be weighed at a grocery which uses a verified weighing scale.

The weight shortage was confirmed and when asked the cashier merely said “kami tidak tau” (we don’t know).
Ah Kin said the cashier was right as the grocery was selling the item as was received.
“The 15gm of cooking oil is able to cook a few more dishes,” he said.
He said there should be no reason for any weight shortage as the subsidy paid by the government for cooking oil is based on volume supplied.

“The sold volume should tally the subsidised volume,” said Kin.
He noted that under the Weights and Measurement Act, weighing scales had to be certified by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and supposed to be accurate to the last gram.
