PAPAR: A 24-year-old motorcyclist who is believed to have gone against traffic died after colliding with a four-wheel-drive along KM32, Jalan Lama Papar-Kota Kinabalu, Tuesday.
District Police Chief DSP Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka said the 2.40pm incident involved a Hilux driven by a 58-year-old man with two passengers heading towards Kampung Langkuas from Kampung Sulim.
He said the vehicle was on the right lane when the driver spotted a motorcycle travelling against the traffic flow and heading in the former’s direction.
“The driver hit his breaks and attempted to avoid by entering the left lane but could not do so in time.
“The deceased was thrown off his motorcycle into a nearby drain (that was dividing the highway),” he said.
Kamaruddin said the victim, heading towards Kota Kinabalu, was believed attempting to evade a roadblock set up by the Papar Investigation and Traffic Enforcement Department.
He said the team was unable to inspect the victim as he avoided the roadblock by going against the traffic flow onto the main road instead of the road shoulder which caused him to collide.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by Kinarut Health Clinic Medical Officer and the body was brought to Papar Hospital Forensic Unit for post-mortem, he added.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
