Kota Kinabalu: The Holy Week, a significant period in the Christian calendar, was commemorated with fervour and devotion across various Roman Catholic churches in Sabah.
The week-long observance started on Palm Sunday (March 24) and ends on Easter Sunday (March 31).
Palm Sunday, which signals the beginning of Holy Week, saw churches filled to capacity as devotees gathered to mark the occasion.
The day is celebrated with a “Grand Entrance” to remember Jesus Christ’s entry into Jerusalem, a moment that symbolises his willingness to face suffering and death on the cross.
Priests blessed the palm leaves of devotees, a tradition symbolic of the palm branches the crowd scattered in front of Jesus as he rode into Jerusalem.
The week’s events provided an opportunity for believers to reflect on their faith and the profound sacrifice made by Jesus Christ for the deliverance of the world from sin.
